NDIS provider Charlestown

Charlestown sits high, about 116 metres above sea level, with its shops built around the Pacific Highway. We help people with disability get around the slopes, the big shopping centre and the quieter streets behind it, seven days a week.

Support in Charlestown

A suburb built on a hill asks more of a morning routine, and a good support worker plans for the slope before anyone steps out the door.

Charlestown is in the City of Lake Macquarie, about fifteen minutes' drive south of our Wallsend base. Charlestown Square is the main draw, with Myer, Big W, Coles, Woolworths and ALDI among more than 280 retailers under one roof.

Charlestown Library, walyamayi, is on the corner of Smith and Ridley Streets. Charlestown Swim Centre on Dickinson Street has heated outdoor 25 metre and 50 metre pools, accessible showers and toilets, and a chair lift for getting into the water.

Plenty of homes sit on sloping blocks, where the driveway can be steeper than the stairs inside. Closer to the Square there are more apartment blocks with lifts.

Newcastle Transport routes meet here: the 11 runs to Charlestown Square from Jesmond and John Hunter Hospital, and the 14, 41, 43 and 48 head on towards Belmont and the lake.

Glenrock Support is a registered NDIS provider working across Charlestown. For NDIS Charlestown help, most families want a worker who knows the area and stays the same.

Can you help me get to Charlestown Square from my place on the hill?

Yes. Your support worker can walk or roll with you to the bus, travel with you on it, or drive you if your plan covers transport. We work out the easiest way down and back before the first trip, including where the gentlest footpaths are.

Is the Charlestown pool any good for someone who uses a wheelchair?

Charlestown Swim Centre has accessible showers and toilets and a chair lift into the pool, according to Lake Macquarie's swim centre pages. Your support worker can come with you and help in the change room. Toronto Swim Centre has a platform lift and a Changing Place if you need a hoist.

Do you cover Charlestown on weekends?

We do, though weekend starts tend to fill before weekday ones and may mean a short wait. The capacity line on this page shows where things stand and the date it was last checked. If a weekend start isn't free, many people begin on weekdays and add the weekend once a spot opens.

My son lives with us in Charlestown. Can a support worker help while we're at work?

Yes. We support adults, so your son needs to be 18 or over. A support worker can help him with meals, getting ready, or going out, while you are at work. He decides what the shifts look like, with your help if he wants it.

Is there a library in Charlestown with quiet space?

Charlestown Library, walyamayi, is on the corner of Smith and Ridley Streets, close to Charlestown Square. Your support worker can go with you to borrow books, use a computer or join a program there. Ask the library about its quieter times if crowds are hard for you.

How far is Charlestown from your Wallsend office?

It is about a fifteen minute drive, depending on traffic. How any travel is claimed follows the Pricing Schedule rules, and it is written into your quote before anything starts. Our support workers who live south of Newcastle often take the Charlestown shifts.
